Clearing landmines is dangerous and laborious. While the
number of landmines laid continues to grow due to ongoing conflicts,
the economics behind them explain why they remain so effective.
The central challenge is to assess affected areas as quickly as possible
without exposing human deminers to unnecessary risk, allowing falsely
blocked land to become accessible again.
At the same time, resources for full clearance need to be deployed precisely
to avoid unnecessary effort and accelerate land release for affected communities.
